NATIONAL CONFERENCE—HOTEL INFO:
Shamako has been on the ground in Boulder, Colorado for the past week. He has been making connections, scouting locations, and getting a taste of what we will be experiencing on June 22nd to the 25th for our 5th annual National Conference. Make sure you are there. Book your flights now.

And for the long-awaited hotel information.

We have reserved 30 rooms with the Boulder Outlook for you all. The hotel is great! Walking distance from the conference events and only 90 bucks a night. You can fit up to 4 people per room so it works out to something like 25 a night with tax.

To reserve your room, go to www.boulderoutlook.com. 1800 542 0304. We have 30 days to fill them up at this rate so please call and book the room today. It’s better to reserve and cancel if for some reason you need less rooms than to need another room and not be able to get it at our rate.

TEXAS STATE:
This upcoming week will be dedicated to preparing for Trio next Saturday. This event is going to be HUGE! We have tons of entertainment and other orgs who plan on participating as workshop leaders!

This Friday is Bobcat Gold which we will be performing at. This Saturday is the Campus Activities and Student Org awards. We’re nominated for Org of the Year which we took last year!

LORAS COLLEGE in DUBUQUE:
Hey all, we’re just winding down our semester, but have a lot of things planned. Our dance team will be special guests at a dance show for Iowa State University this weekend. This is one of the biggest shows in the area this year and they have worked really hard on their dance. We also have a special hour that we are hosting for dance marathon where we will be teaching some dance moves and playing hip hop music. This is a great service project to be apart of and we encourage other chapters to get involved with their school’s dance marathon. A few members of the dance team will be back up dancers this weekend at the Coolio show. We will be apart of the Taste of Loras in a few weeks. Hosting a booth and performing spoken word and dancing as well. The last event we have planned for the semester is an end of the year BBQ fundraiser. This is just a good time to get together, eat and play some music. We are looking into the national conference in June, to see who will be available to be there. Have a great end of the year if you don’t hear from us.

UC IRVINE:
Heeey what’s happenin’ out there in this crazy world of ours? All we can think about here is what’s brewing for this quarters event and that would be The Final Invasion of Hip Hop…that will be bigger than anything we’ve done before. A 16 man emcee battle, 5 on 5 bboy crew battle, and we’re working on someone dope as hell to headline the whole damn thing. We got an unexpected co-sponsor (the associated student government) and they are hooking us up big time man…so we’re working our hardest to plan this thing right. Something you should definitely trek out for. We have a date and location already, Saturday May 13th in Crawford Hall at UCI, and will have the battlers finalized and ready to go soon. As soon as we know which artists are performing we’ll letcha all know with the quickness. Stay pumped, we guarantee you’ll pee your pants.

Also going down at UCI is this event today April 19th, Hip Hop Race and Politics in a Post 9/11 World presented by Sohail Daulatzai, UCI’s African American Studies Program and Hip Hop Congress at UCI. As an art form that is almost 30 years old, hip-hop has profoundly impacted contemporary society and culture, both nationally and internationally. While a great deal has been written criticizing hip-hop for its crass commercialization and its seeming apathy, many within the hip-hop generation continue to find in hip-hop the hope and possibility that the culture was founded upon. Who are “the hip-hop generation” and what are their politics? How has hip-hop been utilized by activists and community organizers around a whole range of issues? And while youth across race are active participants in hip-hop’s cultural movement, where are the spaces being nurtured to encourage the hip-hop generation to engage in a politics of change and organize a cross-racial political agenda? These and many other issues will be addressed by a distinguished group of panelists as we seek to explore the possibilities and pitfalls of hip-hop culture in the 21st century. The panel will include Bakari Kitwana, author of The Hip Hop Generation and Why White Kids Love Hip Hop, Adam Mansbach, author of Angry Black White Boy, and Fidel Rodriguez, host of Divine Forces Radio of KPFK in Los Angeles. Anybody who is in the area should not miss this, you’ll be getting more knowledge than your 9 o’clock chemistry class. Come peep the event in SSL 290, 4-7pm. We’ll see you there.
