Weekly Update o3.26.o7

Short update this week. With more spring breaks happening I figured I would focus on some of our Board Members (and Chicago, but that comes from Asad who is a Board member)

WOMEN’S PROJECT
peace, y’all…continuing to build on the network front of women in Hip Hop – emailing and meeting with people. i saw an amazing film called Counting Headz: South Afrika’s Sistaz in Hip Hop. i met the director and exchanged info. if anyone’s interested in showing this film at their school/in their community, hit me up. i sent out an info memo/update to the 40+ members of the women in Hip Hop listing i’m working on compiling. if you’d like to receive a copy of it, connect with me at sarah@hiphopcongress.com. it outlines the new mission and goals, future ideas (newsletter, website, conference, leadership training), and ways to get involved. i’m going to be getting in touch with the chapter heads over the next few weeks to check in about the Women’s Project. also – check out femalehiphop.net. we’ve got a posting there and i’ve already gotten some emails from people who saw it and want to connect. keep doing what ya do…peace n blessins

CHICAGO
This past weekend, Hip Hop Congress members along with the F.E.W (Fifth Element Warriors) participated in the Idealist Campus Conference (www.idealist.org). F.E.W held down the opening ceremony with D-Nic as a host and Man-O-Wax as the DJ. The rest of F.E.W jumped in later for a special 20 minute set combining DJing, MCing, and Breakin’. The show went so well that we ended up raising $300 to help bring a rep from the Nigeria chapter to this year’s conference.

HHC repped the next day, with Asad holding a fresh workshop on Art and Social Change, which was attended by about 50 participants. The workshop was followed by an open mic, once again hosted by D Nic, and a breakin workshop/cypher led by none other than Super InLight! HHC/FEW were definitely the talk of the entire conference…. you know how we do!

GUBITZ WRITE UP
Our very own founder and tuba lover Ron Gubitz had an incredible write up in the Indiana University Alumni Magazine. It covered everything from his Teach For America gig to Hip Hop Congress involvement. There is no link directly to the article but you can d/l it in all its glory (and in pdf form) from this link http://senduit.com/99d04a. This link only lasts a week then you have to email me or Ron to get it re-up’d.

JORDAN WRITES GOOD
Speaking of writes ups another founder, Jordan Bromley, had an article published on Billboard! Its about things lawyers can do to help develop artists. But just because its directed toward lawyers does not mean there isn’t worthy info that can help any manager or artist. So check it out at

There is not one mention of chasing an ambulance! Talk to you all next week!

WILLAMETTE
yo the Black and Brown Unity Tour was enlightening to say the least. We didn’t get the attendance I was hoping for, but everyone that did show really enjoyed the discussion. M-1, Rosa Clemente, and Dawn Fischer are all some knowledgeable individuals and if any of ya’ll get the opportunity to bring any of them to your campus to speak do not hesitate, they were worth every penny. Real down to earth as well. -Austin

INDIANA UNIVERSITY
IU Chapter just ended a year and half long Katrina Fundraiser by donating $1000 raised from T-shirt sales to the Hope Crisis Rescue Missions Organization based out of Elkhart, Indiana and stationed in Gulf Port, Mississippi. I went down there to volunteer my Spring Break doing some construction/rebuilding/demolition work. Things are still really messed up down there but everyone I met was in good spirits. -Tim

UC IRVINE
Man, two shows in two weeks…how did we pull that shit off?!?!? Lots of help from the real homies that’s how. Last week (3/1) was Blackalicious and Pete Rock with ASUCI (student government) and this recent week,(3/8) just had Zion I & the Grouch with DJ Jazzy Jay.Blackalicious went alright, 2200 kids in a gym with bad sound with HHC dj’s keeping the party alive outside for the b-boys. By far…we KILLED it at the Zion I show….it really was a Take Over with the Afrikan Student Union, we will all post videos soon. I hope you all got the flier too…it was a good fun theme to have for a show. All the HHC heads that have been down from the start at Irvine, were all there for us holding it down strong. Man, if it weren’t for you guys, I wouldn’t have felt as safe with all those people in there. The Berry Terrace was packed to the max….kids all in there like sardines in a can or somethin’ hahahha, people were sweaty, drunk, high and some got super pissed off at us. Some wack ass “lyricists” jumped on stage and tried to freestyle but they were shut down by Rahman…with some clever lines that got them booed off-stage quick. Thanks Rah, for making that trek down from the Bay for us…but HHC family is real
family, I’ve realized.

That’s also why…I’ve decided to keep UCI HHC low key from now on…the Zion I show was damn good, but there were a lot of posers out who wanted to start shit and had their own perception of what Hip Hop should be like…and we’re not into that here. Our main goal this year was to collaborate with the other student orgs at school, bring good music that hip hop is based around, and generate new membership. So far…we’ve been collaborating and that has been amazing because the American Indian Student Association and Afrikan Student Union are all behind us now….we never really had support from other clubs before so this is great. Also, even though working with student government really sucks, now we have access to all their supplies and money. I have formed the right connections to make Hip Hop Congress indestructible at Irvine next year…people are feening for us here. They want us to be a part of their events now…and the best thing is…we can say NO if we want to. I know there have been lots of politics involved….are we selling out by throwing a 50 grand show? But when we have no membership at school and the first show of the year has a turnout of 70 people…we have to be visible to the student population. I was hearing “hhc is dead” all at the beginning of the year, and now…we’ve revived. I really feel that we have. So if anyone out there has any thoughts to share with me on this, please feel free…I’m open to any ideas and suggestions, but I feel like we’e been tackling this the right way. And all the frustration… well…it’s a part of the fun…we gotta deal with some negative people in life, so let’s just LET IT GO….ahhhhh….feels good to let it go….

Thank you to my HHC family…for being there, even when you’re not physically there. You are dope. and Thank you to Zion I…this is the 3rd time for HHC…and they keep it real.

Always,
HIP HOP CONGRESS LOVES YOU.
and anh loves you too…
peace!

MINNESOTA SUMMIT RECAP/UPDATE
The 2nd Annual Hip Hop Congress Minnesota Summit was a complete success. Dr. James White and Asad Jafri (DJ Man-o-wax) really helped the heads here plug into what’s happening with HHC and recognize where we are going. Local students are looking to start a chapter here in the Fargo-Moorhead area and an exchange student at Concordia is looking to go back to Norway and start a chapter there (kinda like how our Germany chapter started). Luckily Napoleon Maddox from IsWhat?! will be in Norway this summer to help them think about where to begin.

Napoleon is also going to work with Dr. White to strengthen our presence in Cincinnati, Ohio (where he is based). On another front, a group i’ve been working with for years called Kanser, want to become HHC artists and start a community chapter in Minneapolis. They’re planning to come to the National Conference to connect with our people from other regions. Poets Alixa & Naima (www.climbingpoetree.com) came out from NYC and look to connect their important activism with HHC as well.

Oh and by the way…we had a ridiculous show that included Kanser, Alex Schein, Culture Shock Camp, IsWhat?!, The CORE, Brother Ali and a performance by Bravemonk, DJ Man-o-wax and the Five Element Warriors (FEW) of Chicago that blew the roof off!

Minnesota Update:
Efforts are underway to begin developing a Minneapolis community chapter of HHC. Big Zach from Kanser, Marcus Manning from “Blame it on Hip Hop” and others intend to collaborate together to try and bring it together. The community chapter may potentially be a local hub that connects efforts in the streets with a number of campuses in the area that are ripe for the development of chapters as well. The seeds are being planted and we’re hoping that the Spring will help it grow…
