Weekly Update o4.o4.o7
INDIANA UNIVERSITY
IU Chapter isn’t up to much as a whole lately. Little 500 is coming up which for those of you that don’t know, it is the biggest college party week of the year. Brothehr Ali and Psalm One are playing that week but so is Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, 3 6 Mafia, and even Jibbs. A few Congress DJs are being featured as part of Bloomington’s “club night” which features a lot of local bands at a few of the bars. Great weather
lately too.

Bands are booked, the underpass is painted and publicity is going out for the Hip Hop Congress First ever DOPE mini-festival featuring live performances from student bands. We are using it as a fundraiser and also collecting canned goods. Hip Hop week (April 23) is fast approaching and we are trying to get some speakers locked down for our panel discussion on prisons in society. All suggestions are welcome. We got a crazy ass budget asking for around 13 LARGE, but that’s guap to a chapter like us, WHAT

WILLAMETTE
Yo we are all bunkering down to get everything ready for the second annual Conscious Overdose Concert, with headliners Blue Scholars and Common Market plus our own local MC’s to warm the crowd up. We definitely are short on money though so if anyone has any good money making ideas hit us up because we need some cash bad. The show will go on though and we will just have to hope ticket sales get us out of debt.
Peace

INDY COMMUNITY
Yes Yes Y’all, what it tis! We, the Indianapolis chapter, are excitedly approaching the jump-off of “Elements,” the youth-driven Friday night activity directed around giving young people (and older, if they are interested!) a hands-on opportunity with each element of hip hop. Likewise, in the name of good promotional timing, our most popular and widely distributed local magazine (INtake) wrote an article (printing on Tuesday) on our chapter and as me as a DJ/journalist. It will be a good look for us all and will hopefully pull in additional visitors come Friday.
We have also established a ZULU Nation link with a member originally from Chicago and are awaiting information on a couple grants. That’s primarily the haps for now! Still looking forward to and spreading the word about the Nat’l Conference as well. G’yea.
Peace, MetroGnome
LORAS COLLEGE
We wrapped up our breakdancing competition last Saturday. It went off well. We had a good number of students show up as well as Dubuque community members. We are already planning next years battle, but probably for the fall. We are gearing up to perform at the Iowa State Hip Hop Club’s annual show in a few weeks to finish the year. We are also planning to have a dance with lessons to get students involved and excited about hip hop congress. I’ll give you all more next week on where we are at with that.

U of COLORADO DENVER
Hip-Hop Congress U of Colorado Denver just completed its first Hip-Hop Dance workshop. We got around 30-40 attendees and taught them all the elements about bboying. We are trying to make this workshop a monthly event that bboys in Denver can come too. We also teamed up with our school’s student government to help attract the student body to get involved in campus events
CHICAGO COMMUNITY
After many months of “negotiations” with the landlords, the Hip Hop Congress Chicago Headquarters has officially been handed over to us. Much respect to B Boy B for hooking it all up! There is still a lot of work to be done to the space, so anyone who wants to volunteer some time, please let us know!
Also, we now have 3 official Chicago HHC Interns that will be aiding us from now through the summer. More on them in the next update.
Here are a couple of events for the week:
Man-O-Wax, Bravemonk, and InLight will be traveling to the Univ of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign chapter of HHC to help with their student battle this Saturday, April 7th.
MC Invincible and Detroit Summer’s LAMP (Live Arts Media Project) will be making a trip to Chicago to connect with the Hip Hop Community here this week. The group consists of 10 youth and 5 mentors and will be conducting workshops, performance, and group exchanges. HHC is one of the groups participating and helping connect Chicago orgs with LAMP.
Short and sweet update this time so we can let other cities and regions shine!
LINK OF THE WEEK
This 6 minute short debuted at the 2006 Hip Hop Congress Mid-West Summit. It is a tribute to the different dance styles of the world, starting at the root and working up to the present day. B-boys beware, features Brooklyn’s own Breaks Kru killin’ it for the final 3 minutes.
