My name is Travis Cole (DJ Philos) and we have recently started a HHC chapter on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque. We are chartered and funded as of about a week ago and we are working on setting up weekly public cypher’s on campus incorporating all of the elements (we got funding for sound, linoleum, panels to paint, plus $ for fliers), free B-Boy workshops (more workshops to follow) and two events. The first event is with Fatlip and Tre Hardson (Slimkid Tre) from Pharcyde plus some local talent and the other is a Dia de los Muertos jam. Both shows are at a local arts collective called stove because the good venues on campus were already booked but it’s cool because we invited local artists out to do a sick piece on the outside of the building that is all Day of the Dead themed, something we could never do on campus.

Anyway, we already have the venue on campus booked for Breakin’ Hearts 5, the biggest b-boy event in the state probably for valentine’s day next semester (our boy has thrown the show for the last four years and is now a member of our chapter so it works out really well) and we’re working on one other show for next semester that will be our response to recent acts of racial intolerance on campus. We will hopefully be featuring an open panel discussion on the role of artistic expression as a form of resistance against intolerance and prejudice, plus we’ll feature local local hip-hop artist’s as well as musicians in other genres (to celebrate cultural diversity) and exhibitions by a local flamenco group and a local
capoeira group, b-boys, etc. We are also trying to get a national headliner through. I’m not about the logistics of that yet, but we’re hoping to get artist’s from other chapters involved if anyone’s down.

As a corollary project, some of the other local member’s and I have been working on an international hip-hop exchange between the U.S. and Cuba to protest the blockade and travel ban and also to build with some killer Cuban hip-hop artist’s. Last year was the first year and it was pretty successful, but next year will be off the hook.

We’re narrowing down the school’s who are interested in having us come out for our “Congress Kidz” presentation and we have a big group of people who are in the committe. So it should be a huge success!!!

University of Michigan

HHC at University of Michigan has been coming along nicely. The chapter is looking to do a battle on campus shortly and the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs intends to hold a regional Midwest Summit in February.
The breakdancing group ‘Element 1′ has connected with the chapter and intend to work together in the future. They do a couple big Bboy events each year that we’ll support them on. We’ve also held a film screening of the film “Desde El Principio” on Cuban Hip Hop directed by U of M PhD. student Vanessa Diaz. It’s a film we’ve got to get out to our network. More information about that coming later…

this is the sjsu chapter, we had our hip hop congress showcase oct 16 at the sjsu amphitheatre. good lookin out to todays news, tha spitta and the righteous movement for rockin it, the show was live and the response was good. be on the lookout for future events from our chapter, we got big things in the works

Sacramento Community Chapter
What’s the thizznezz? Hope all the chapters are doin good throwin’ major eventz! We’ve been layin low for the most part. We’re working on getting a presentation together so that we can get a funded after-school program by the middle-schools and high schools in the Sacramento area. Bogey and Wyzdom have been diligently workin on gettin the presentation proper so we can take over Macramento godzilla style. Dj Flow has been workin on events at Sac-State and he has an event this Thursday Oct. 24th at the CSUS Ballroom with the Addict Merchants, Live Manikins, & The Neighborhood Watch. We had our boy Skurge and his group The Righteous Movement perform with YDMC, AM-1, Madman, & The Spitta out at San Jose State. Bringin together that Nor-Cal Connekt. The Hip-Hop Chess Federation brought out the Rza, Gza, Raaka from Dialeted Peoples, Zion from Zion-i, Casual from Hiero, Big Rich, Paris, T-kash, Davey D, Fred Hampton Jr. from the Black Panthers and others to play chess. The event was dope and I saw a lot of folks from the Yay area chapter. Other then layin low workin on big thangs, jus wanted to wish everyone a Happy Halloween!

Mississippi

Greetings from the mighty magnolia state of Mississippi. Preparations are underway to begin the tedious process of planning the 2008 HHC conference (ED Note: more on the conference next month) which is to take place on the Mississippi Gulf Coastin late July. Any HHC members wishing to assist may contact Kamikaze @ kamikaze601@hotmail.com or Quanstar 678 613 2776. Proceeding that event the MAP coalition in conjunction with HHC will be holding a Southern Regional Music Conference in Jackson, MS on January 26th. The conference will hopefully merge two factions under one roof, the business side of hiphop with the activist arm of hiphop. There will be seminars dealing with the business/music side of hiphop AND panels focusing on hiphop activism along with performances during the day and a big showcase that night. Any interested parties please hit kaze. And last but certainly not least Congratulations to the MAP Coalition who recieved the Charlie Braxton Icon Award at the 3rd Annual Mississippi/Alabama music conferenece on Oct. 20 in Columbus, MS.

Hip Hop Sucks Because of You, actually not ya’ll, but for a majority of the people reading our flyers they are more than likely guilty. Thats why its the name of the panel we put together for a discussion and demonstration of real hip hop. We have HHC’s very own featured in the panel with Shamako, The Silent Lambs Project, Julie C and King Khazm, Defcom 5 and DJ Wicked. This is Jennifer Rosenberg, chapterhead and president of the newly formed Cal Poly HHC. Just wanted to send an update lettin everyone know that we are doing an Elements showcase on Thursday Nov 15th, downtown at a venue called Club Tridosha from 9pm-midnight. Please help us put the word out there that right now we’re lookin for graff and spoken word artists, or emcee/ crews in the central coast area that would be interested in coming down and preforming. This is one of our first solo events trying to get ourselves out there and raise some money for the chapter. CPHHC particpated in CultureFest in downtown SLO couple weeks ago which was a big success, we got a prime spot and DJ’d the event and the bboys were drawin the crowds!

6. The “Hip Hop Chess Kings Invitational” was a Major Event that got Worldwide Attention: Oct 13, 2007…….. The event took place in San Francisco,CA and featured Hip Hop Heads (RZA, GZA, Sunspot Jonz, Casual, DLabrie, MonkParis, Balance, Big Rich, Amir Suluman & More), Chess Champions (Josh Waitkins), Martial Artists (UFC), and Youth from All over the Bay batlling it out on the Boards of Chess. The event was hosted by Rakaa of Dialated People and also featured a Information panel where RZA discussed his visit to Shoalin. RZA took home the HHCF Championship Belt and Flaunted it for the World to see. Now that’s mysteries of a chess boxin. This was the 3rd Installment of the HHCF Tournaments which haa grown with each event. HHCF uses Hip Hop, Chess & Martial Arts to promote Unity, Strategy, Non Violence.
