The DJ Melee [Austin]

A new DJ event and party format has been developed in Austin. Hip Hop Congress is fully supporting this new idea with hopes of spreading it to many of our chapters. Read below and watch the video to get a feel for whats going on.

DJ Melee /dee jay maylay/ n. 1. A touring DJ competition showcasing the vinyl scene and urban nightlife in major U.S. cities. 2. A gritty, documentary style reality show. 3. One hell of a party.

The DJ Melee, an original Austin based production, is getting sparked!. Stacks of wax are about to be burned as the best DJ’s in town will face off in a winner take all battle for rhythmic supremacy to showcase the best of Austin’s DJ subculture and vinyl scene, DJ’s will be selecting from the hottest record stores in town. Each DJ will have only five minutes to pick up 30 pieces of vinyl to use in a thirty minute set at a series of DJ Melee parties thrown at Austin’s best clubs. All vinyl goes straight into a locked box until show time. Local industry judges will have the final vote on the DJ’s mixing skills and music knowledge. With reputations on the line, who will be crowned the best DJ of Austin and move on to go head to head with the best Los Angeles and Brooklyn has to offer? Records will be broken!

Austins’ Competing DJs: DJ Manny, Giant Hornets from Japan, coolhands, DJ Orion, Abominatron, DJ Tweedy, DJ Bigface, Ian Orth, DJ Starsign

Format: Part one: 3 DJs compete at Mohawk April 11.
DJ Manny vs. Giant Hornets from Japan vs. DJ Tweedy. One winner is chosen.

Part two: 3 DJs compete at Beauty Bar May 9.
Abominatron vs. DJ Starsign vs. Ian Orth. One winner is chosen.

Part three: 3 DJs compete at Club DeVille June 13.
DJ Bigface vs. coolhands vs. DJ Orion. One winner is chosen.

Part four: Final 3 DJs compete at Mohawk on July 18 to be crowned winner of Austins’ DJ Melee.
