MISSISSIPPI HIP-HOP ARTISTS TO PERFORM IN GHANA, WEST AFRICA JUNE 26TH-JULY 3RD
On the heels of their successful tour of the Czech Republic in August of 2007, two of the state’s bigggest hip-hop names are now headed to Africa this summer.
Jackson natives Kamikaze and DJ Phingaprint are slated to headline two big concerts in the west African cities of Accra and Cape Coast as part of their annual Republic Day activities June 26th-July 3rd. The holiday is the anniversary of Ghana’s becoming a republic of the British Commonwealth in 1960.
The tour is sponsored by the Rhyme or Reason Foundation of Cape Coast which will be holding its annual Hip-Hop conference that same week. Founder Carol O’ Conner says the goal is to develop a ‘sister-city’ relationship with Jackson and Ghanian Hip-Hop artists.
‘Kamikaze and Phingaprint have a huge following overseas and we wanted to introduce Africa to some Mississippi Hip-Hop.’ she said. ‘Ghana has its own aspiring hip-hop artists who literally worship music from the states and they will benefit greatly from meeting Kamikaze and Phinga!’
Also slated to make the trip are Urban Designer John Tierre a.k.a ‘Stax’ of Official Blockwear and Rapper Tony B.
‘We are indeed honored to be making this trip,’ says Kamikaze. ‘Anytime you get to travel abroad as an ambassador for an entire state you have to bring your best. This is a good look for us as artists and for Mississippi as a whole.’
