Colorado get ready for this FRESH Hiphop weekend starting off with the Boulder screening of Souls of the Rockies, the first documentary showing the historical legacy of Hiphop in Colorado from 1980-1993.

And the next day Saturday, the Annual Rockers Rumble Bboy/Bgirl Breakin’ competition! Breakdance crews …from all over the nation come to BOULDER COLORADO to battle it out for the grand prize of $1500.

Oakland Local to be Official Media Sponsor of FreshFest 2010

Oakland Local and Grind For the Green are proud to announce that OL will be the official media sponsor for FreshFest 2010, a “green festival for the people” happening August 14 at Oakland’s Mosswood Park.

“First and foremost, this event is all about the community,” said Grind For the Green co-founder Zakiya Harris. “We’re coming from a grassroots point of view, so for us, it makes a lot of sense to partner with a media organization which is also very community-minded and grassroots-oriented.”

“I love what Zakiya has been doing as a teacher, educator, and activist, and an event like FreshFest is totally in sync with Oakland Local’s mission – to spotlight positive, fun, things happening in Oakland, as well as spread community awareness among like-minded organizations,” said OL co-founder Susan Mernit. “To have an event which promotes social justice, food justice, environmental justice, and conscious youth development, and is happening locally to boot, is very cool.”

In the days leading up to FreshFest – billed as the largest youth –led eco-music festival in the country, be sure to visit the OL site for advance coverage of the many eco-sustainable, entertainment, youth- and family- oriented activities taking place.

About FreshFest 2010: The FreshFest integrates eco-awareness and eco-education with entertainment, making learning about green practices, programs, and careers fun, while promoting sustainability through recycled materials, biodegradable foodware, and organic food. The event will feature a fresh food pavilion featuring locally-grown organic produce, hands-on demonstrations, health and wellness activities, Fresh Kids Zone, Hip-Hop Competition, and concert. Special guests include MC/host Boots Riley, the legendary Pete Rock (playing a solar-powered DJ set), and local artists Erk Da Jerk, Do D.A.T., and Holly Saucy, along with GetFresh/G4G Youth. Rockford, IL — The Midwest Monsters Breakdancing Crew (partners of The Hip Hop Congress of Rockford,IL) is hosting the fourth annual Battle Shmattle, which is a breakdancing competition on Saturday, Sept. 11th, 2010 6pm–12am at the nCenter (220 S. Madison St., Rockford, IL 61104). The breakdancing competition gives individuals a place to showcase their talents to music provided by a live DJ while giving them a chance to win prizes for being the best dancer of the competition. The theme this year is the classic WWF Wrestlemania event during the Hulk Hogan era!

The breakdancers will show the foundations of hip hop dance as they compete head-to-head with dynamic moves in the form of flips, spins, tricks, and more. The competition will be judged by judges from the Chicago, Madison and Rockford area whom are respected worldwide for their dancing abilities. This competition will present those in attendance with a real-life perspective on what it really means to be a breakdancer, while providing competitors with a positive place to share their talents. The music provided by a live DJ will range through various generations and genres of music, which will enhance the experience for all in attendance. Breakdancers from Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and several cities around the local area will be in attendance and everyone is more than welcome to attend and/or participate. The competition cost $5 to enter and watch, and all of the proceeds will go directly towards supporting the dancers by providing prizes and funding future events. There will be an afterparty at Kryptonite (308 West State Street Rockford,IL) for those 21 and over, and there will be an breakdancing exhibition outside of Kryptonite for those 21 and under. Please support the dancers in this fundraising event as they physically defy the laws of physics and pay homage to everyone’s childhood favorite, Wrestlemania!
