Jon Hull
For Jon Hull and his wonderful hair
Jon I went and took a few more pictures in the area we have been talking about on Red River. Below are a set of pictures that are of the side of the Red Eye Fly and the only possible place the image would have been set up on. Unless they brought their own backing wall (which is another option and would only require “renting” two parking spaces and creating our own backing wall of standing black tarp….)
This last picture is of how close Stubb’s is to the parking lot of Red Eye Fly

I have started to make a few phone calls to people and I found out that I have a friend who works at the Salvation Army, whose back wall faces Red River and is directly across from Red Eye Fly. The is spot is in the pictures below and has pretty great visibility.
This picture is from standing in front of the Red Eye Fly

Hey Jon to try to make this work for you I went and took pictures the other night of places that may work and then returned during the day time to see if they still represented good positions. Also I focused around the Red River area like we talked about but I still tried to take some pictures around the 6th St. proper. Below are my 5 top spots. However here is a link to all my pictures that you can download and look through yourself. http://www.divshare.com/download/3847783-774
A note. All these spots will basically require paying the place where the projector is housed, where the image is projected, and a person to guard the machine. Also everyone will want to be able to approve images. No one wants to deal with porn these days.
Spot 1: The Construction site across from Mohawk’s.

This site is directly across from the Mohawk decks. The projector would be housed at Mohawk’s. A full idea would be to have the black tarps placed behind the windows to make sure the image stays as solid as possible. However it could be dark enough in that area that black tarps may not be needed. Also full guerrilla style would be to not even worry about the construction site permission and just have the image pop up after all the workers leave. (this is my vote….but I am a cheapo sometimes.)
The cons to this site are the unpredictability of the image’s backing and also the construction site is next to Stubb’s rather then across the street. There is a part of the building across from Stubb’s but only people with their back to the Stubb’s stage would have a chance to see it, which mainly are people going to the bathroom. Not a good look in my opinion.
Spot 2: The Back of the Homeless Shelter
This site is at the corner of Red River and awesomeness. It is across from Elysium, Plush, and a third new venue that just opened up this past year. It can be seen by people heading to Stubb’s, Mohawk’s, Beauty Bar, etc. It offers the largest solid blank canvas. It would offer the most exposure.
The cons are this site would be the hardest to lock down. Not only would a deal have to be worked out with the Homeless shelter but a car would have to be rented and housed in their lot. The lot is safe and there would be car sitter but working with government / civic buildings can be an extreme hassle because govt’ workers are lazy even if extra money is involved. I think I can get it done but this would easily be the priciest spot too.
Spot 3: The liquor store on Red River and 7th.
This spot is across the street from the Homeless Shelter spot. It is a parking lot area that will be full with cars during SXSW, however the roof area should be clear. It offers similar exposure as the homeless shelter spot, but because of the angle of the roof you have less predictability for the images. This spot would require housing a car in the parking lot.
The cons are that the building houses a liquor store and a chop shop so dealing with the building owners could be an adventure.
Spot 4: Iron Cactus on 6th St.
This spot is directly off on 6th st. It offers a clean black canvas that will be clearly scene by the walkers of the main strip. The projector can be posted on a car or on the building across the street. Tons of exposure.
The cons are again that this spot is going to get pricey and Iron Cactus is a ‘more upscale’ establishment so I don’t know if they will go for it, but then again people allow different things during sxsw that they normally wouldn’t.
Spot 5: Back of Starlight on 4th St.
This spot is located across the street from Lance Armstrong’s bar Six. This image would be seen by all walkers of Congress, as well as anyone on 4th St looking for Speakeasy, Light Bar, Vicci, Ceder, Fado’s, Halycon, and a few other spots.
The cons of this spot offers the most hit or miss exposure since in the past there hasn’t been an incredible amount of night time buzz in this area. For some reason this area of town has good day events instead. Also this would require housing a rental car as well.
So Jon it really boils down to how much you want to spend.
