This Year, Hip Hop Congress is proud to announce its 2009 National Conference to be held in the Central District of Seattle. In the spirit of Coalition building and community Support, Hip Hop Congress has partnered with such local groups as the Umojafest P.E.A.C.E. Center, the Seattle Youth Council, Dope Emporium, 206 Zulu, ther 45th Parallel Zulu, Global Fam, Oseao Music Group, B-Girl Media, the Bassmeant, Mothers Outreach Movement, Reclaim the Media, Urban Teachers Network, Silicon Valley DeBug, Hip Hop Without Boarders, 2nd Nature and other local organizations and collectives. The conference will be hosted at a series of neighborhood institutions in the CD near the Historic Garfield High School, where legendary producer Quincy Jones once attended.
This year’s conference will depart greatly from conferences of the past, as it will be focused on direct education and action, community service, cultural performance and organizing and a minimum of panels and non-goal oriented events. Instead Hip Hop Congress wants to shift the focus from analyzing Hip Hop to doing it and being it. “We have been growing at a phenomenal rate and this year we want to focus on developing skills, strengthening networks, supporting youth and community centers, and the artists and youth that make them what they are. We want to make it clear that even if the non-profit industry goes up and down, we intend on building a long term sustainable network, and supporting others in doing the same all over the country.”
This year’s will feature workshops and trainings in Digital Distribution, Community Complaint Centers For Police Accountability, Fundraising and Sustainability in a post crash economy, Media and Technology Trainings and much more On Line Marketing and Promotion, Hip Hop and Education Programming and Protocol, Economic and Political Training for Hip Hop. In addition to all of the above, there will be screenings of 206 Hiphopumentary, The smash independent hit “The Beat”, and Scott MA Youth Workshops through the Umojafest, participation in the Umojafest Parade, performances from independent artists from all over the country like OneBeLo, Invincible, DLabrie, Knox Fam, Mic Crenshaw, Reali Robinson (Mictabilist), Rahman Jamal, Black Stax, B girl Be co-founder Desdamona and countless others.
