NEW MISSION STATEMENT:
Dustin Craun led us in a breakout session where we all came up with mission statements. We then combined groups and edited until we came to this:
“Hip Hop Congress is an International Grassroots Network that educates, empowers, and unites individuals. We preserve and evolve Hip Hop by inspiring social action and cultural creativity within the community.”

We are happy to announce the unanimous election of Shamako Noble as the 2nd ever President of Hip Hop Congress. Shamako has many plans for the Hip Hop Congress and is eager to hear from all of you. Please email him at shamako@hiphopcongress.com if you have questions, comments, concerns, etc.

BOULDER RECAP:
Boulder had a great time, the highlight for me was the mission statement on the Congress end, and Rahman battling the army was the Hip Hop highlight for me. Boulder is really hyped about having the conference next year and we are already planning, having meetings with city organizers, putting together a state wide Hip Hop coalition, and we are getting ready for a huge fall recruitment push.
Dustin
UC IRVINE RECAP:
UCI had a great time at conference! Chicago was amazing, and we were happy to reunite with everyone after a great year. We’re already starting to prepare for next year, and we will definitely be coming with numbers.
This weekend, we had a get together called “Live at the BBQ pt. 2″ hosted by DJ Frank-E of CSUF. Music, carne asada, drinks, and volleyball soccer- Hip Hop Congress knows how to get down.
Jeremy
OHIO RECAP:
The conference was amazing. We are especially exited about the education process that was being discussed and organized. The new mission statement looks great. J5 and Brother Ali where just straight sick wit it. We are trying to get some good events going on for next year so that we can have some members of other chapters come to Ohio and enjoy. Overall the conference was great, already looking forward to Boulder next year.
peace,
Tommy Boone
WASH U RECAP:
Biggups to everyone out there who made the conference happen. I had a ridiculous time, got to know many more of yall, and got to hover in some hot cyphers. My throat is still recovering from an unnatural amount of beatboxing, and that trashcan learned first hand why you don’t wanna go to war. We got some great things ahead of us. Keep movin.
Peace
Yoni
SAN JOSE STATE RECAP:
Yo the conference in Chi-town was off the meat rack! It was really dope to see all the chapters that made it out. Coming up with a mission statement that we can all identify with was really good and knowing the new initiatives for Hip-Hop Congress is good. I would just like to say that meeting all different peops from all the other chapters was really inspiring in knowing all the dope ass events everyone has done and good things they have done to help out the community. The experience of the Hip-Hop Congress Conference is like a MasterCard: priceless!
URBANA-CHAMPAIGN:
Sup all, It was great meeting everyone at the conference, I didn’t get to network as much as I had hoped, but the cyphers were mad energetic. Unfortunately I missed the jam and barbecue but I hear from Alistair that they were the best parts of the weekend. Speaking of which, I’d like to let everyone know that Alistair will be the Chapterhead this upcoming Fall, so update your e-mail lists! The whole crew is a group of newer heads and I’ve got a lotta confidence in the shit they can put together. Other than that, Urbana-Champaign is fairly dormant…Peep www.uchiphop.com if you’re interested in the happenings ’round here.
Peace!
Victor
REIKES CENTER FUNDRAISER:
Accurate Sound Corporation www.accuratesound.com and International Village Gallery www.internationalvillagegallery.com cordially invite you to attend a reception:
Saturday, July 16, 2005, from 1:00 ? 6:00 p.m.
Presenting: ?The Spirited Sculptures of Zimbabwe? directly from Africa
Shona sculpture has long garnered international acclaim and is frequently featured in exhibitions around the world. Steeped in the legends and traditions of African civilization, these remarkable semi-abstract sculptures are inspired by the myth and folklore of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. Shona sculpture is carved from the local serpentine stone and other stone found in the area. Each sculpture has its own coloration and shading. Serpentine is a sedimentary rock that is formed on ancient sea beds. Layers of sand, silt and other materials create a stone that is rich in colors when heated and polished, ranging from red to green to brown to black.
Ten percent of the sales will go to benefit the Riekes Center for Human Enhancement (www.riekes.org) at 3455 Edison Way in Menlo Park, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit mentoring organization dedicated to the joy of self-enhancement for youth through programs in athletic fitness, nature and environmental awareness, fine art, hip hop, rock, photography, video and film. The three major areas of study at the Riekes Center are Creative arts, Athletic fitness and Nature studies within a safe environment of nonjudgment and mutual respect. Truly, at the Riekes Center, ?Everybody C A N!? During the reception on July 16, the Riekes Center will remain open for any interested individuals to take a tour and observe the programs offered to the youth of our community. The Riekes Center is located right next door to the Art Exhibit. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Ron Newdoll for his heartfelt generosity and support of our work through this magnificent exhibit. The Art Exhibit will be held from July 16 ? August 30, 2005, at 3475-A Edison Way, between Middlefield Road and 101(E-W), and Marsh Road and Fifth Avenue (N-S). Private tours are available. Please call (650)365-2843 for more information. Please make every effort to attend; to be in the presence of the work of the Shona people is a moving, transformational experience not to be missed.
FINAL RON SHOUTOUT:
I hope everyone is doing well. We don’t have a chapter in Seattle yet, but we certainly have a good publicist telling everyone he knows about Hip Hop Congress. I had grandmas coming up to me this weekend asking about Hip Hop Congress. Thanks to Mark Hasson for spreading the love, and congratulations for getting Maya to marry you.
Peace and Love,
Ron Gubitz
